The simplest method for house training your puppy is the paper training method.
First, you’ll want to teach your puppy to go on command. Don’t let this freak you out, but you can actually start this process inside the house before teaching him to do it outside. Here’s how: pick a specific area inside the house, perhaps near the back door, in the laundry room, or a cordoned off bathroom. Place a layer or two of newspapers on the floor, covering the entire area. Then every hour or so, place your puppy in this destignated area and give him the command, “Do your business.”
Eventually, he will relieve himself during one of these sessions. Make certain you immediately praise him. In fact, smother him with praise!
During this training time, you’ll want to keep a close eye on him whenever he’s in the house. If he gives the slightest indication that he might be ready to do his business, you’ll want to pick him up and get him to the designated area quickly. Then give him the command, and if he performs, follow up with praise and a treat.
Once he learns to go on command, then you move the process off the paper and outside.
This is an easy process to go through, however as with most puppy training, paper training requires some patience and a bit of vigilance whenever your dog is inside the house. As with any form of reward training, always make sure he receives plenty of treats and praise. When he realizes that following your command pleases you, he’ll try extra hard to get it right.
